The book is well structured and my only true issue with it is that 80% of book 1 could be cut and the rest could have been put into book 2 and made maybe a few hours longer. The being said this series is high recommended and i would offer this to anyone else because these are more so my personal views on it thus far. To advance, he turns to the arcane skills of the Soulsmiths. I wish he was a little more focused in a combat discipline rather than the crafter because books where the MC ultimately cheeses his way to victory is just disappointing. The second volume in the New York Times best-selling Cradle series Lindon has taken his first step on the road to power, but the sacred artists of the world outside his homeland are still far beyond him. I am gonna continue the series because I got faith but I hope he develops more and his type of character is one I find very hard to support but not impossible. While he is being set to the task these last few books have felt lackluster and the story has been a slight slog for me to get through regardless of my anticipation of what could happen. Okay so I had very high expectations going into this series and while it leaves a lot of lead up to lindon being pretty strong in the future and he is now getting resources. “Frankly, the material presented on the internet was so fanciful, I couldn’t believe it was true,” she says.Īs she dug into Stubby’s history with a healthy dose of skepticism, she found some misconceptions. soldiers, but she had her doubts about his wartime record. In a recent discussion on a Ligotti-devoted message board, I remarked after rereading it that the story "The Red Tower" And Thomas Ligotti remains one of the premier contemporary authors of such fiction. I retain, however, my enthusiasm for fiction that expresses this view, fiction that is, like the essay and monograph mentioned above, itself a form of sublimation. I still regard the pessimistic view of existence as accurate I just don't find it very interesting. As time has passed, I've found my interest in sublimation limited, and moved on to distraction, amusing myself with entertainments and getting caught up in the business of daily life. I first encountered this framework in an early draft version of Thomas Ligotti's monograph The Conspiracy Against the Human Race, which transformed my own mechanism from anchoring (constructing the illusion that certain principles transcend or defy the horror of existence) to sublimation (acknowledging that horror but using the knowledge of its existence as a source of action and consolation). In his essay "The Last Messiah," Peter Wessel Zapffe identifies four mechanisms by which human beings avoid dwelling on the inherently tragic nature of human life: isolation, anchoring, distraction, and sublimation. The Best We Could Do brings to life, with words and images, Bui's journey of understanding and provides inspiration to all those who search for a better future while longing for a simpler past. With haunting, poetic writing and breathtaking art, she examines the strength of family, the importance of identity, and the meaning of home. Despite how impossible it seems to take on the simultaneous roles of both parent and child, Bui pushes through. Exploring the anguish of immigration and the lasting effects that displacement has on a child and her family, Bui documents the story of her family's daring escape after the fall of South Vietnam in the 1970s, and the difficulties they faced building new lives for themselves.Īt the heart of Bui's story is a universal struggle: While adjusting to life as a first-time mother, she ultimately discovers what it means to be a parent-the endless sacrifices, the unnoticed gestures, and the depths of unspoken love. This beautifully illustrated and emotional story is an evocative memoir about the search for a better future and a longing for the past. As a group we decided that we needed a ‘trashy’ horror story and that’s how we came to read Domain – not only is Domain about giant killer rats, but it is also set during and after an apocalyptic nuclear attack on London. After another week we called an emergency meeting in order to choose another book that would be easy to read and likely that most people would enjoy. Book group was still in its infancy back in April 2004, having started the previous September, and people’s interest was starting to flounder because of the book choice. After the month was up no-one had finished it and the meeting was delayed by a week once this further week was up another extension had to be issued as everyone was still struggling to finish the book.
